If you substitute yarn, make a sample with the intended hook and compare it with the pattern's gauge and construction requirements. Avoid assuming that the same stitch count will give the same finished dimensions with a different yarn.
Look closely at a small sample
Before beginning a character, crochet enough of the intended stitch pattern to assess the fabric. Can you clearly identify your stitches? Are increases and decreases easy to follow? For a stuffed part, check whether the fabric gives the coverage the pattern requires.
For spiral ornaments, assess the ribbon and its assembly separately from the character head. Follow the pattern's support and attachment instructions. A pleasing texture on one component does not establish the dimensions or performance of the completed ornament.
Plan a palette for the whole collection
Lay your main colours beside the shades you will use for small details. A shared red, green, cream or gold accent can tie a group of different characters together. Check whether the face, hat, scarf and miniature decorations remain distinguishable against one another.
